Musical Artist - Zevon, Warren

Warren Zevon was an American songwriter and musician best known for his hit Werewolves of London. Born in Chicago, Zevon moved to Los Angeles as a teenager and began a relatively successful career providing songs for other artists, writing songs such as Like the Seasons for the Turtles, and She Quit Me for the soundtrack of Midnight Cowboy.

Zevon made friends and collaborated with a veritable who's wo of 1970s folk rock music, working with artists such as Jackson Browne, Stevie Nicks, Lindsey Buckingham, Bonnie Raitt, and Linda Ronstadt. In particular, Ronstadt went on to cover many of Zevon's songs, most notably Poor Poor Pitiful Me. In addition to writing songs made into hits by other artists, Zevon turned many of his compositions into hits himself including the aforementioned Werewolves of London, as well as Lawyers, Guns, and Money and Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner.

Zevon was David Letterman's favorite musical artist, appearing on his Late Show a couple of dozen times. When Zevon was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer, Letterman had him on the show as the only guest for a full hour, providing him with an emotional send-off. Zevon died on September 7, 2003 shortly after the release of his final album The Wind. The album received five Grammy nominations, winning two of the awards.

There is a website dedicated to Zevon's work named Warren Zevon.

Musical Artist - Zager & Evans

Zager & Evans was a folk pop duo made up of Denny Zager and Rick Evans. The duo achieved their only popular success in 1969 with the release of the science fiction tinged song In the Year 2525, a song which reached number one on the U.S. and U.K. pop charts. The song was written in 1964, but not recorded until 1968, following a breakup and reunification of the group.

The duos was backed by Mark Dalton on bass and Paul Maher on drums, although Maher was later replaced by Dave Trupp. None of Zager & Evans' other songs even reached the top 100 in the U.S. or the U.K., although they did have a minor hit in Australia with a creepy song about a rapist titled Mr. Turnkey.

Musical Artist - Young, Neil

Neil Young is a Canadian musician with a fifty year career spanning multiple musical genres and dozens of albums. He first came to prominence in the 1960s as part of the band Buffalo Springfield, and then had some solo success before joining the supergroup (at the behest of his former Buffalo Springfield band mate Stephen Stills) Crosby, Stills, Nash  & Young from 1969 through 1971. Following his turn with Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, he returned to his solo career and began turning out hits. Despite staking out a successful solo career, Young continued to work with Crosby, Stills, and Nash, sometimes individually, and sometimes reuniting with them as he did for a tour in 1974.

Over his career, Young has turned out memorable song after memorable song, including Old ManA Man Needs a MaidHeart of GoldSouthern ManAlabamaHey Hey, My My (Into the Black), and Cinnamon Girl. He has won two Grammy awards and has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice.

Young is also an avid model train aficionado, and before the company filed for bankruptcy and his ownership interest was wiped out, he was a shareholder in the Lionel model train company. He is still on the Board of Directors, and holds several patents for model train related technologies.

You has a website named the Neil Young Archives, although you have to register to access it. He can also be found on Twitter and Facebook.

Musical Artist - Wilder, Gene

Wilder as Frederick Frankenstein
in the movie Young Frankenstein
Gene Wilder was an American actor, director, and writer who is probably best known for his performance in the role of Willy Wonka in the 1971 movie Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. After a bit part in Bonnie and Clyde, Wilder's career really got going when he appeared in the Mel Brook's comedy The Producers, for which he earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. This was the start of a fruitful era of collaboration between Brooks and Wilder that saw the pair work together to create the classic comedies Young Frankenstein and Blazing Saddles. Wilder also worked with Richard Pryor to create four movies, including Silver Streak and Stir Crazy.

In addition to being a magnificent comedic actor, Wilder was a director and screenwriter. He directed several of the movies he appeared in, including The Woman in Red, The World's Greatest Lover, and The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes' Smarter Brother. He also wrote many of the movies he appeared in, most notably Young Frankenstein. He also wrote his own memoir in 2005 and three novels.

I first saw Wilder in the movie The Little Prince, where he played the role of the Fox. Despite having a very talented cast that included Bob Fosse, Richard Kiley, Donna McKechnie, and, of course, Wilder, the movie is kind of a mess, and was nearly incomprehensible to when I saw it at the age of six. I do remember Wilder's performance though, and in a way, I think that's a metaphor for Wilder's life. No matter what project he was in, be it good or bad, he stood out, not just because of his radiant talent, but because his warmth, gentleness, and fundamental goodness shone through. I have seen Wilder in bad movies, but I never saw Wilder turn in a bad performance.

Wilder was married four times, the third time to fellow actor and comedian Gilda Radner, who died in 1989, just five short years into their marriage. He was married to his fourth wife, Karen Boyer, for twenty-five years from 1991 until his death in 2016.

Musical Artist - WarRock, Adam

Adam WarRock is a rapper who produces music in the "Geek Core" genre, rapping songs that are littered with references to comic books, science fiction, table top and computer games, and other nerdy themes. He has created albums dedicated to the Browncoats, the members of House Slytherin, the West Coast Avengers, the X-Men, Doctor Who, and the Song of Ice and Fire series as well as numerous others all featuring similarly nerdy themes.

As one might expect of a nerdy rapper who makes his living by appealing to attendees at geeky conventions and the denizens of the internet, Adam has a substantial internet presence including a website named Adam Warrock, a YouTube channel, and a Facebook fan page. You can also follow him on Twitter.

Musical Artist - Wild, Jack

Jack Wild was an English actor who rose to prominence with his performance as the Artful Dodger in the musical Oliver! both on stage and in the movie adaptation. For his efforts on screen, Wild was honored with an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor as well as BAFTA and Golden Globe nominations. Due to the fame gained by his performance as the Artful Dodger, Wild was offered the lead role in the Sid and Marty Kroft production H.R. Pufnstuf, appearing in all seventeen television episodes and the 1971 movie. Unfortunately, Wild found the transition from child star to adult actor to be difficult, and after starring in the most disturbingly surreal and bizarre children's television show, he found roles hard to come by. In 2004, Wild underwent surgery for oral cancer which was sadly unable to halt the disease, and he died from it in 2006.

Musical Artist - Wallis, Shani

Shani Wallis is a British-born American movie, television, and theater actress best known for playing the role of Nancy in the 1968 movie adaptation of the musical Oliver! In addition to her substantial role in Oliver!, Shani has appeared in a handful of movies ranging from Terror in the Wax Museum to The Pebble and the Penguin, as well as a handful of appearances on television, but spent most of her career on stage. A child actor who appeared on stage beginning at the age of four, she made her musical debut in 1952 in a production of Call Me Madam. This performance was followed by numerous other roles including Wonderful Town and Finian's Rainbow. Wallis emigrated to the United States in 1960, eventually becoming a naturalized citizen. Along the way, she added several notable musical roles on the American stage to her resume, including turns in South Pacific and The King and I.

Musical Artist - Wintergatan

Wintergatan is a Swedish band specialized in instrumental music. Founded by Martin Molin in 2012, and consisting of Martin plus Evelina Hägglund, David Zandén, and Marcus Sjöberg, the band has released two albums thus far. In 2016, the band released a video of a music making marble machine that took eighteen months to build. Within days the video had received tens of thousands of views, giving the band an enormous amount of internet fame. The name "Wintergatan" is Swedish for the Milky Way, and was inspired by the night sky as seen during the band's initial recording sessions.

Musical Artist - Wheaton, Wil

Wil Wheaton is an American actor probably best known for playing the annoyingly insufferable Wesley Crusher on Star Trek: The Next Generation, as well as appearances as a child actor in the movies Stand by Me and Toy Soldiers. As an adult actor, he has appeared in numerous independent movies and television shows, including Leverage and Big Bang Theory, as well as web series such as The Guild. He also has numerous voice acting credits in productions ranging from The Secret of NIMH to Batman: The Brave and the Bold, to Teen Titans. He has also narrated more than two dozen audio books.

The most important thing about Wheaton is that he is not Wesley Crusher. I did not like the character he played. I like Wil Wheaton quite a bit. Since his days being the whiniest teenager in the Federation, Wil has turned into an amazing ambassador for geek interests, and the creator of Wheaton's Law: "Don't be a dick". I consider his most important contributions to be cofounding the Geek & Sundry YouTube channel with Felicia Day and hosting the board gaming show Tabletop.

Wheaton has a website named Wil Wheaton dot net, a tumblr blog named Wil Wheaton dot tumblr, and a YouTube channel. He can also be found on Twitter and Facebook.

Musical Artist - The Vince Guaraldi Trio

The Vince Guaraldi Trio was a jazz band composed of pianist Vince Guaraldi, bassist Fred Marshall, and drummer Jerry Granelli. Vince Guaraldi was a prominent jazz pianist who had scored a hit with the song Cast Your Fate to the Wind, for which he won a Grammy Award. The group was formed by Vince Guaraldi and their primary claim to fame is recording the music for A Charlie Brown Christmas, which has turned out to be one of the most successful television specials of all time, with one of the most distinctive musical scores. Guaraldi went on to compose the score for seventeen more Peanuts television specials as well as the feature movie A Boy Named Charlie Brown.

Musical Artist - Vangelis

Vangelis (1943-Present) is the stage name of Evangelos Odysseas Papathanassiou, a Greek composer of electronic-oriented music. Vangelis is best known for his ethereal soundtracks for movies like Chariots of Fire, Alexander, and Blade Runner, and television shows like Cosmos. Despite being such a prominent composer, having released more than fifty albums of music, Vangelis spent most of his career unable to read music. After performing as part of several different groups for much of the nineteen-sixties, he struck out on his own as a solo artist in 1973 with the album Earth. In 1981, he wrote the score of the movie Chariots of Fire, for which he won an Academy Award.

Musical Artist - The Virginia Gentlemen

Founded in 1953, the Virginia Gentlemen is the oldest a cappella singing group at the University of Virginia. They were originally part of the Virginia Glee Club, but separated from that organization in 1987 (which, coincidentally, is the year that I started at the University). Due to their sixty year old origins and their position as the flagship singing group of the University, the group's standard performance attire is a blue blazer, khaki pants, and orange and blue bow ties. The group has toured extensively, and has been asked to perform for three sitting U.S. Presidents - George H.W. Bush, George W. Bush, and Barack Obama, but I know them best from their annual holiday concert in Cabell Hall at the University, which always concludes with their "awful" version of The Twelve Days of Christmas.

Musical Artist - Twain, Shania

Shania Twain is an Canadian country singer and songwriter, and is one of the most successful performers of all time. Although Twain released her first album Shania Twain in 1993 to modest success, she didn't really hit it big until 1995 when she began working with her future husband, producer Mutt Lange. The resulting album, The Woman in Me, produced four number one hits on the country chart: Any Man of Mine, (If You're Not in It for Love) I'm Outta Here!, You Win My Love, and No One Needs to Know, as well as top twenty hits Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under? and The Woman in Me.

Twain followed this success with the albums Come on Over and Up!, both of which produced numerous hit singles including Love Gets Me Every Time, Don't Be Stupid (You Know I Love You), You're Still the One, When, Honey, I'm Home, You've Got a Way, Man! I Feel Like a Woman!, That Don't Impress Me Much, From This Moment On, I'm Gonna Getcha Good!, Forever and for Always, She's Not Just a Pretty Face, and It Only Hurts When I'm Breathing. ne of the interesting things about Shania's career is just how concentrated her success has been. Though she has had modest hits before and after this trio of albums, the bulk of her hit singles are found on these three albums, which were all released between 1995 and 2002.

Since 2002, Twain released her greatest hits albumin 2004, which produced the hit single Party for Two, and then essentially walked away from the music industry for a decade. She returned to recording and released the album Now in 2017. Over the course of her career, Twain has received seven Grammy awards and has been given a star on Canada' Walk of Fame and the Hollywood Walk of Fame. She has also been inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame and has been named Entertainer of the Year by both the Academy of Country Music and the Country Music Association.

Twain has a website named Shania Now. She can also be found on Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube.

Musical Artist - Tripod

Tripod is an Australian band that is notable for its humorous songs and witty banter. The band is comprised of (naturally enough) three members, Scott "Scod" Edgar, Simon "Yon" Hall, and Steven "Gatesy" Gates. The trio met while they were all attending the University of Melbourne, and they gained notoriety by performing at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival and their regular spot on the Triple J radio show.

Their musical style is eclectic, ranging from folk, to ballads, to "hard rock", although they only use acoustic guitars as musical accompaniment to their songs. They usually perform to the music of just one guitar played by Scod, but sometimes they add another played by Gatesy. No matter the style they are performing in, their signature is always their humorous and usually geek-oriented lyrics. The band has an official website named Scod, Yon & Gatsey Are Tripod.

Musical Artist - Townshend, Pete

Pete Townshend is a British guitarist and songwriter most notable for being part of The Who for the better part of the last five decades. I'm not sure what to say about Townshend. If you haven't heard of him I can only assume you've spent most of your life living under a rock steadfastly refusing to listen to any music and anything I write about Townshend will fall on deaf ears.

Musical Artist - Tyler, Bonnie

Bonnie Tyler is a Welsh singer best known for her hits Its a Heartbreak and Total Eclipse of the Heart. Born Gaynor Hopkins, Taylor changed her name when she started performing to avoid confusion with Welsh singer Mary Hopkins, first selecting the name Sherene Davis, and then settling upon Bonnie Tyler in 1975. Her debut album The World Starts Tonight was released in 1976 and produced two modest hits - Lost in France and More Than a Lover.

Bonnie's follow-up album was Natural Force, which produced her first truly big hit with It's a Heartache, but the other singles off of the album received an indifferent response. Tyler had throat surgery during the recording of this album which helped enhance her the distinctive raspy singing voice that became her signature. Tyler released two more albums over the next three years, neither of which had any significant impact on the charts.

In 1983, Tyler began working with Meatloaf's long-time collaborator Jim Steinman, a combination that produced the album Faster Than the Speed of Night and the massive hit single Total Eclipse of the Heart. The single became Tyler's biggest hit, aided in part by a bizarrely surreal music video. Tyler also worked with Steinman on her sixth album Secret Dreams and Forbidden Fire, which contained the hit single Holding Out for a Hero, which appeared on the Footloose soundtrack. A cover version of the song performed by E.G. Daily was used as the opening theme song for the television series Cover Up.

In the years since Secret Dreams and Forbidden Fire, Tyler has recorded ten more studio albums, and has some success in Europe, but has never been able to duplicate the successes she had working with Steinman. Over the course of her career, Tyler received three Brit Award nominations and three Grammy award nominations.

Tyler has a website named Bonnie Tyler. She can also be found on Facebook and has a page on the Internet Movie Database.

Musical Artist - Tommy James and the Shondells

Tommy James and the Shondells are an American band originally formed in 1964 when the original members were still in high school. Several of the members, including Tommy James, were originally in a band named the Echoes which was founded in 1959 - although at the time the then 12-year-old James was still called Tommy Jackson. The band released the single Hanky Panky in 1964, but it attracted little attention outside of the Midwest and the group split up in 1965 when the members graduated from high school.

In 1965, a dance promoter in Pittsburg found the 1964 recording of Hanky Panky and began using it at dance parties and promoting its play on local radio stations. In 1966, James found out about the renewed interest in the single and headed to Pennsylvania to capitalize on it. Unfortunately, by the time this happened, the other original members of the Shondells had moved on and were unavailable to reunite to promote the song. James ended up recruiting a local Pennsylvania band almost at random to be the new Shondells. With this new group backing him and national promotion, James was able to make Hanky Panky into a number one hit.

Disputes over pay and other things led to three of the new Shondells leaving the group shortly thereafter, and they were replaced by new members. This new lineup produced several top forty hits over the next three years including Ball of Fire, Crimson and Clover, Crystal Blue Persuasion, I Think We're Alone Now, Mirage, Mony Mony, Sugar on Sunday, and Sweet Cherry Wine.

James left the group in 1970, citing exhaustion, and the remainder of the band floundered without him and then broke up. James then launched a solo career that resulted in the hit Draggin' the Line. In the 1980s, covers of three Shondell's songs because hits for other artists: Crimson & Clover for Joan Jett & The Blackhearts, I Think We're Alone Now for Tiffany, and Mony Mony for Billy Idol.

In the 1980s, James began touring on the oldies circuit, usually under the name Tommy James and the Shondells, although almost none of the other members of any iteration of the Shondells were involved. The band has existed in some form ever since, always with James and sometimes with and sometimes without other members of the "classic" version of the Shondells.

The Shondells have a website named The Official Website of Tommy James and the Shondells.
